This painting is a tribute to the resilience of a woman who, despite unimaginable violence, refuses to be broken. Her missing eye is a stark reminder of the brutality she endured, yet her expression remains defiant—proof that her attacker could not erase her strength or dignity. Inspired by a real survivor from my homeland, this piece speaks to a wider reality: in Russia, domestic violence laws are nonexistent, reproductive rights are under attack, and war continues to devastate the lives of women—not only in Russia but also in Ukraine, where countless women have faced displacement, loss, and unimaginable trauma.
Louise Bourgeois once said, An artist can show things that others are too afraid to express. When society silences women—whether through legislation, fear, or war—art becomes an act of defiance. This painting is my way of bearing witness, of ensuring that the suffering, strength, and survival of these women are not ignored.
